Carl Richards:

This is The Write Connection. This podcast is designed to help you choose the right words and stories in your business content to create authentic connections with prospects, clients, partners, and colleagues. Now the host of The Write Connection, Katherine Burrows.

Katherine Burrows:

Thanks, Carl, for that fabulous introduction. And thanks for joining me again today as a guest on the right connection.

Carl Richards:

I am super, super thrilled to be here at once again, Katherine, this is becoming a thing that I just keep jumping on your podcast every now and again, which is totally cool. So let me congratulate you for a very successful season one phenomenal season. How does it feel?

Katherine Burrows:

It feels awesome. I did not imagine it to be anything as awesome as this way back when I was recording episode one.

Carl Richards:

Let's talk about season two, because you have learned so many things as a podcast host in season one. So let's talk about some of those things. What are some of the things you've learned?

Katherine Burrows:

Well, I learned as you know how to let go of my script, we touched on this last time you and I talked in Episode Seven, we were doing that interview in Episode Seven with no script. And that was a pretty big jump for me. And it went really well. And I've continued to do that. So what I do usually is I chat for five or 10 minutes just before hitting record with the guest. And we talk about some like major points that we want to cover. But we certainly don't map out everything word for word. And it ends up being very organic and dynamic. And it's awesome. It's been such a wonderful experience.

Carl Richards:

That was a big leap. I know for you because when you're working with written word, it's different written words all about the script, where spoken word tends to be less about the script more about the message and getting that connection. It's still with words, but its type of connection. So congratulations on that you also have the chance to explore other content platforms, not just the audio, which was a huge leap for you too, but other ones that have crept in.

Katherine Burrows:

Yeah, so full disclosure, I have always hated being videotaped, like ever for my whole entire life. Now I am launching a YouTube channel and we're doing videos of all my interviews, and it's gonna be awesome.

Carl Richards:

we made notes about this, I want you to expand on this a little bit. being authentic means embracing the unexpected.

Katherine Burrows:

A little bit related to letting go of my script, and just being open to the conversation being okay with maybe not knowing exactly where it's gonna lead, and letting the guests have some of that leading and being open to being in the moment and getting cues from what they say and how I'm going to lead the next part of the conversation.

Carl Richards:

Sometimes you just have to say a few things or give the leading you don't have to ask a formal question, which tends to be in a lot of people's comfort zones is I need to have all these questions lined up. You don't. You just need to know where you're going. And if you allow yourself to be in that authentic place, which you have done throughout your 25 episodes, that allows you to have those real moments, those magical moments that if you're just asking a question, they might not be there. It's looking for those jump off points. When you're having a conversation. You don't script it with friends, when you're having a coffee, you don't say good morning, honey, question number one, how are you today? You don't go through that. But when we're having a podcast, especially for people who are brand new, it tends to be I have to ask you these six questions, and it has to be in this order. And I'm going to say this, and it has to be like this. What about some of those magical moments, those jump off points where your guests say something that is just we go, oh, my goodness, if you're only focusing on the questions, you're not focusing on those authentic moments, those unexpected jump off points. So congratulations on that.

Katherine Burrows:

You know, even if you ask someone ahead of time, like what they want to talk about, or what are the three main points you want to cover or something like that, those magical moments don't come out in that prep work. It's something that happens just exactly as you're recording. It's not planned. And so being open to that I think has made my interviews so much better than they would have been if I did script them and plan them and tell the person I need a two minute answer for question one and a five minute answer for question two, and really, when my whole brand and my whole self is about authentic connection, how can I not do it this way? You know not to say that the other ways don't work for other people and other podcasts. But this way is really the only way that I can do it for me.

Carl Richards:

But it definitely is a stretch because you're retraining your brain, right? You're reframing what you've already been taught about the written word. And there is a certain strategy or a certain way to go about whether you're publishing an article or a book or a chapter, or whatever it is, there's still a method or a way in which you do that spoken word slightly different. You need to allow yourself to have more of a free flowing form to watch for those jump off points. Because if you don't, you might miss them. In a written text in a book in an article in some kind of a summary. You don't necessarily have those jump off points, they don't just magically appear. If they do magically appear. That's good. But that's another chapter. That's another book. That's another written text. So and thank you so much for embracing that. That's phenomenal. I want to move on, though, and ask you about because you said this, and I want you to expand on this, too, that podcasting is social. What do you mean by that by podcasting is social? I agree, by the way, but explain it in your words, what do you mean by it.

Katherine Burrows:

I find that writing, of course, can be a very introverted activity, we're often alone when we do it. And so then having the podcast, although it's a very creative pursuit, and in particular, my podcast is still very much centered around words. It's also very social, because I'm getting that connection with people. And it's not just the kind of like, Hey, how's it going, but they're really deep conversations. And I just find that so personally, and professionally, really fulfilling.

Carl Richards:

And it's a very cool thing, too. And you can expand that social aspect, like you said, written, it's a little bit different. You know, if you were to write out your podcasts, it's kind of like I attuned to having your a solo show. It's still very conversational, but it's less social, right? You're thinking of your audience all the time. But it's only you. If you have a guest, you're having a conversation, you're having some fun, you're having some laughs, they're telling their story, there might even be tears, so great, embracing that. I want to talk about some of the mental exercises that you go through to get the podcast ready, or you call it the prepping your brain or preparing your brain. What do you mean by that?

Katherine Burrows:

Well, I'm learning a lot more about creativity and the science behind that and how to be more productive in creative pursuits and creative careers. But just how the time that we spend our downtime, that time that we don't schedule, taking time to connect with nature to connect with loved ones, animals, doing other creative things, like it all just refreshes that well of creativity. So instead of feeling guilty for doing those things, I'm now embracing them as they make what I do professionally so much richer. My three words my core desired feelings for any of you who follow Danielle Laporte are thriving, creative and connected. So I write out I am thriving, I am creative, and I am connected. And it just really sets the tone for my day, both my work day and my day in general. So it's been an awesome habit to get into.

Carl Richards:

And that's certainly come out in your podcast too. So an awesome season one congratulations on a fantastic season we can't end this yet because we need to talk about season two. And what you are looking forward to the most for season two. I know you've got some things that you've been cooking up for the last few weeks, getting things ready for season two. So what can people look forward to?

Katherine Burrows:

Yeah, this is so awesome. I definitely don't want to stop now. So we got to keep going. I have some interviews upcoming and we're going to kick off season one, with a two part interview with Kieran Doherty. He's only 22 years old. He's had an early career in motocross, but then had to reinvent himself after a career ending injury. And I just wanted to share a quote by Abraham Lincoln that reminds me of Kieran. In the end it's not the years in your life that count it's the life and your years so he's definitely proof that you can have a really rich beautiful deep story and you don't have to be old in years to have accumulated all of those experiences.

Carl Richards:

And I know he's a dynamic player in both your business and in mine too. And a great interview too so I maybe have heard a little bit of it. Already I've already heard pieces of it but no a fantastic interview. What else for season do I know you've got some surprises.

Katherine Burrows:

Some surprises, I can't give them all away but there's a couple more things I'll say. I'm going to talk to both Steve and Jane Lowell who I've done extensive work with over the last pretty well year now or certainly by the time this airs. It'll be a year. So Steve Lowell is an internationally renowned speaker and current president of the Global S`peakers Association, we'll talk about his journey and how he's loved being in front of an audience since childhood and how he got to where he is today. And Jane Lowell is a seven figure mindset coach, and she talks about her journey of having it all, to having nothing. And backup to doing really well and thriving. Together, Steve and Jane are S & J Training Solutions, creators of the Deep Thought Strategy and Expert Insights.

Carl Richards:

And that book emerged that's on your desk either to talk about that at some point. I know this is a sense of pride because you're in this book.

Katherine Burrows:

So this is the compilation book that we just launched a couple weeks ago Emerge be the Unmistakable Authority in your Field, and there are 30 authors. So it's co authored with Brian Tracy and Steve and Jane Lowell as well as 27 other people who are amazing experts in their field, it is well worth the read.

Carl Richards:

I haven't grabbed my copy yet, but I'm going to by the time this episode airs in any of those interviews with Steven Jane, do they explain who runs the household? Or do we already know it's Jane?

Katherine Burrows:

We didn't really get into domestic territory.

Carl Richards:

We'll just say it's Jane. But no, seriously, I'm looking forward to those two great interviews to anything else coming up for season two?

Katherine Burrows:

Yes, we have experts in the area of imposter syndrome. Marlene Cameron.

Carl Richards:

Yeah, she's awesome.

Katherine Burrows:

So she talks about her own journey and how she helps other people to identify imposter syndrome, work through it and thrive in spite of it.

Carl Richards:

Very cool. You have a YouTube channel, you've had a kicking around for a while, what's happening with that YouTube channel for season two, though.

Katherine Burrows:

We are going to launch it and all of the video versions of the podcasts will be available the same days that the corresponding episode launches, there'll be launched on YouTube, as well as the audio be launching on buzzsprout and all of the podcast platforms wherever you listen to this podcast.

Carl Richards:

So going into season two, okay, great season one. It's behind us now going into season two. How does it feel?

Katherine Burrows:

It feels awesome. I really wish I did this years ago if I knew. And I feel like I've said the word awesome about 25 times so far.

Carl Richards:

Congratulations on season one. Looking forward to being with you through the journey into season two, and three, and four. And beyond that I'm so excited. So I'm gonna turn it back to you to wrap things up. And yeah, this has been a great conversation. So congratulations.

Katherine Burrows:

Thank you. And I just really want to thank all my listeners. And please stay tuned because we've got lots more awesome content coming.

Carl Richards:

And if you're not a listener yet is the first time you're hearing this podcast or finding it then you need to subscribe, so you never miss an episode. Katherine Once again, congratulations, season one zipped up put to bed Season Two coming so glad to be a part of the team and looking forward to it.
